and Family Resources
Hart
Family Papers, ca. 1770-1990 (pdf)
Contains genealogical information on over 75,000 families from the York County
area. The collection includes correspondence (most from genealogist Joe E. Hart
Jr.), extensive information on the Hart, Hackett and Moore families, and
information on York County history. The bulk of the collection is still being
processed. Currently the genealogical records compiled by Joe E. Hart are open
to the public to use for research. However, the papers contained in the
notebooks cannot be photocopied.
Bobby Moss Collection
Contains copies of records from international, national and regional sources on
Loyalist and Patriot soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, with
emphasis on South Carolina. The collection of approximately 300,000 papers are
being indexed and processed. Index is not complete but is available to
researchers.
Probate Court records include Inventories, Appraisements and Sales, Wills,
Letters of Guardianship, Petitions, Returns, Administrative Bonds, Fee Ledgers,
Ledger of Executions, Dockets, Letters of Dismissary, Real Estate Records,
Letters of Testimony, Account Books, Cash Books, Minute Books, and Estate
Records.
Education Files on families contain documentation, correspondence, and
miscellaneous information gathered by genealogist Joe E. Hart Jr. during his
research. These files may also include information added by staff or other
genealogists. (Researchers may donate copies of their information to enhance
these files.)
Family Genealogy Books contain information and ancestry lines for more than
220 York County families.
Church and Cemetery resources include over 136 individual volumes indexing
mostly York County, some Chester and Union County.
Microfilm Collection contains Clover Herald newspaper (1928-1979), Yorkville
Enquirer newspaper (1856-1923), federal census records (1790-1920), and court
records (probate, deeds, and wills).
Library Books
Researchers may access books in the Search Room on South Carolina and North
Carolina early history, Revolutionary War in the Carolinas, and Civil War
resources. There are published court minutes for Chester and Union counties in
SC as well as Anson, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Tryon counties in NC. Abstracts of
state and county records by Brent Holcomb include deeds and wills for Chester,
Spartanburg, Union, and York counties in SC as well as Anson, Mecklenburg, Rowan
and Tryon counties in NC.
Historical Center Genealogy Database
This computerized database includes the Bobby Moss Index and utilizes Family
Treemaker for organizing the Hart notebooks and other genealogical data. This
database is only accessible by researchers in the Search Room.
