General Information

What is an internship?

The National Society for Experiential Education defines an internship as “a carefully monitored work or volunteer experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience.”

Internships at CHM are designed to help us achieve our mission“to create an enlightened and engaged citizenry by keeping, communicating and connecting our cultural, historical and natural heritage in ways that promote deeper understanding of people and place.”

Why should you be a CHM intern?

Students can

  • Become more competitive in today’s job market by graduating with career-related experience
  • Gain a better understanding of their courses through hands-on application of concepts
  • Test career options and work settings without making a permanent commitment
  • Make valuable contacts with professionals in their field of interest
  • Learn directly from experienced professionals
  • Develop specific skills and knowledge related to a career
  • Gain experience in a real-world situation, including interviewing, working with others, communication skills, and culture of various work environments
  • Develop competencies needed to transition from school to work

What are the components of a good academic internship program?

  • Meaningful pre-professional learning experiences
  • Supervision by a professional at the worksite
  • Academic assignments, such as an integrative paper, oral presentation, job-related project and a reflective journal that helps the student to integrate learning at the worksite with topics from an academic discipline

Do CHM interns get paid?

As a nonprofit organization, we are unable to offer interns monetary compensation, however, we are able to provide a setting where they can learn about the rewards of contributing to the community in a long-lasting and meaningful way.

How do I know what I will be expected to do during my internship?

Internship positions by nature are unique and deliverables will vary by department and project – please review the Snapshot of the Internship position carefully before making your selections. This includes the start and end dates as well as the location of the opportunity itself.

Is there an orientation?

Yes. All accepted interns will be required to attend an orientation (dates to be provided upon acceptance). Orientation will help interns understand what our organization is all about and how they can help us achieve our mission.
