African American Project - Our knowledge of the region's African-American heritage is key to our understanding of the nature of the culture of the Carolina Piedmont. Like the Scotch-Irish heritage, our African-American heritage is a fundamental part of the story of the Carolina Piedmont. This project seeks to uncover the role of African-Americans in the this story with their arrival through forced migration to enslavement, segregation and Civil Rights. Regional cultural traits, such as folklore and decorative arts, will be explored through guest speakers, special interpretation training, material culture objects and oral histories. Information gathered will provide the basis for on-going programs, future exhibitions, and possible publications. (back to top)
