The Civil War and the Brattonsville Community

The stories of the American Civil War are abundant in York County, SC. Several of Harriet Bratton’s sons and sons-in-law departed the plantation to fight for the cause. Those at home, including African-Americans, faced far different situations than they had ever known. 

The weekend living history event will include:

• Scripted scenarios to tell the stories of:


  • News of secession to the enslaved African Americans
  • The effect of the war on independent farm families
  • The Skirmish at Battle of Blackburn’s Ford
  • The experience of the Brattons after the battle


• Display of original Victorian mourning artifacts and stories of their customs
• Mid-19th century civilian archery demonstrations
• Period music by Pickin’ Pearls
• Seamstress and tailoring demonstrations
• Cannon and rifle firing demonstrations
• Children’s military drill
• Camp life
• Historic cooking
• Blacksmithing
• Period church service Sunday morning
• Food concessions for sale
