Wonderful Wednesdays Summer Program Series
at the Museum of York County - New in 2008!
This summer, enjoy our new family-friendly summer program series, wher our museum collections come to life. Meet majestic birds of prey, experience African drumming, stories, and songs, and learn how we are all connected to our river and the natural world. Afterwards, explore the museum, take part in special hands-on activities, or enjoy a picnic outdoors. Groups of 15 or more must call 803.981.9182 for advance registrations.

Wednesdays June 11 - July 30
Special program: 11 a.m.
Hands-on activities: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.

The 11:00 program African Story and Song with Kitty Wilson Evans is nearly full. Please join us at noon for an additional performance. Hands-on activities will begin at 11:00 in the Museum galleries.

Cost includes museum admission:
Adults $7, Seniors $6, Youth 4-17 $5, and Children under 3 FREE, CHM members FREE. Group rates available.

McCelvey's Arts-In-Education Program 2007-2008
McCelvey Center offers quality performing arts programs to regional schools.  For information or to make reservations, please call 803.684.3948 ext. 27, Monday-Friday between 10 am and 4 pm.  Space is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.

Join us as we honor our nation's birth 1840's style with games, cooking demos, musket firings, children's military drills and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Fourth of July Celebration

Bring your lawn chairs and settle in for the 6 p.m. opening ceremony, featuring patriotic music, the Pledge of Allegiance and posting of the colors. Bobby Plair, Jr. will play the National Anthem on trumpet. Then stay for food, kid-friendly activities, a live band and fireworks to close out the night.

Eagles, hawks and falcons have special adaptations, allowing them to hunt efficiently during daylight hours. Meet several diurnal birds and learn about their specialized hunting techniques. Recommended for ages 5 and up.
Presented by Carolina Raptor Center.

Battle of Huck's Defeat
July 12-13
Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Historic Brattonsville
Cost: $10 Adults, $8 Seniors, $5 Youth 4-17,
FREE for Children 3 and younger. $2 CHM member discount.

This Revolutionary War reenactment brings to life the war in the Carolina backcountry.  During the event three significant battles will be reenacted including Huck’s Defeat.  Other activities include camp life demonstrations, music, firearms presentations, and theatrical performances which will bring to life the tumultuous times of the American Revolution.  Younger visitors are especially invited to explore the Children’s Encampment area where they are free to try their hand at historic toys and games, take part in military drills, explore a Revolutionary war camp and hear kid friendly ghost stories.  Shopping and foods will be available.

Battle reenactment will take place at 12:00 Noon and 2:00 PM on Saturday and at 2:00 PM on Sunday.

Sights & Sounds of the American Revolution
August 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Historic Brattonsville
Cost: Free with regular admission

Let the sound of field drums and wooden fifes take you back over 200 years to the time of George Washington and Paul Revere as the Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps perform their Revolutionary War music. Recall the days when fifing and drumming was used to relay commands to soldiers, direct movement of units and provide inspiration. Ongoing tours of the Col. William Bratton home and hearth cooking demonstrations. Following the performance, muster with militia and observe the firing of black powder weapons.

This family workshop, facilitated by Liz Baird of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, is offered in recognition of international “Take a Child Outside Week” (Sept. 24-30). Learn about two projects, the Carolina Thread Trail and A Bridge and Its Place and what they could mean to you. Keep our river clean and help our environment by picking up litter along the shores of the Catawba River as part of River Sweep 2008. Last year, nearly 3,000 South Carolinians collected more than 30 tons of trash during this annual statewide cleanup of our waterways. Local participants will receive a free ticket to the River Docs exhibit at the Museum of York County. Water and light snacks provided.

The season kicks off with the bluegrass band Shady Grove Band. From the Lincoln Center to Merlefest, this Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based band has made a tradition of delighting audiences with their new-timey bluegrass sound. Shady Grove Band has performed over 2,500 concerts throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has appeared nationwide on CBS and NBC.

Compare and contrast our local environment with the natural world of the Piedmont 600 years ago. Meet animals who haven't been seen in our neighborhood for over 100 years and others who manage to live side-by-side with us successfully in the modern world.

Through games and interactive activities, you'll practice the skills of scientific observation and inquiry as you discover the natural world around you. Each Homeschool Fiday includes two 30-minute classes and a planetarium show. Round out your day with a self-guided tour of the museum, a walk on our nature trail, and a picnic in the picnic area.

Piedmont Pottery Festival

Come see some of the best traditional potters form the Carolinas and Georgia demonstrate and sell their wares. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to shop for unique pieces of pottery, see pottery making demonstrations and enjoy talks by noted pottery historians. Children of all ages will enjoy making clay creations and seeing the museum's farm animals. Visitors are also invited to bring their own pieces to be identified by pottery experts. Outstanding regional barbecue will be available for purchase.

America Recycles Day

Be part of a national awareness campaign designed to encourage and challenge people to recycle and buy products made from recycled materials. Christmas Candlelight Tours

Historic Brattonsville

A holiday tradition for more than 25 years, Historic Brattonsville’s Christmas Candlelight Tours bring to life the festivity of the Carolina Piedmont’s Christmas past. Walk candlelit paths and experience theatrical presentations from yesteryear. More than 60 costumed interpreters will depict how Christmas celebrations evolved in the Carolinas from the 1780s to just before the Civil War. Gunners “shoot in” the holiday, a minister discusses Colonial Christmas customs, the Brattons host a “wassailing” party, enslaved African Americans discuss their Christmas customs and a German family lights a Christmas tree.
